This may be a stretch, but here is another way of asking about purpose. Is the purpose of the ant to support the hive, or is the purpose of the hive to support the ant?

Some comments re. the now classic view of frontal asymmetry activation per Davidson and Rosenfeld/Baehr. The reality is that the left hemisphere performs a serlal scan, with the contingency of producing a “safe” judgment, while the right hemisphere performs a parallel scan with the contingency of producing a “not safe” which equals “danger” judgment. These competing forces produce a net emotional response that produces a dynamic balance. Depending on the situation, one or the other direction may predominate, with the situation dictating which is the “normal” or “typical” response. All emotion is therefore within context.
